Joshua “J1” Raiford started DJing when he was 13 years old. He moved to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College and upon graduating with honors he began working under Majic 107.5/97.5 mixer DJ Tron. J1 quickly became one of the hottest DJs in the city and in March of 2008 Bill Black, Hot 1079 APD at the time, made J1 his intern. J1’s passion for music and hard work ethic caused him to learn all aspects of the radio business including on-air mixing, production, programming, promotions, as well as how to become an on-air talent.
In 2009 Dave “Hurricane” Smith promoted J1 to Mix Show Coordinator. J1 helped establish a consistent Mix Show list as well as train and recruit new DJs. In 2012 Hurricane Dave promoted J1 to Assistant Programmer. J1 responsibilities included managing the board operators, mixers, being on-air, and helping out with music rotations.
In 2014 J1 was promoted to Assistant Program Director of Hot 1079 in Atlanta. During this time he also completed his Masters Degree Program in Business Administration at Georgia State University. Under his leadership Hot 1079 reached new heights by successfully selling out 3 consecutive Birthday Bash concerts as well as becoming number 1 in Atlanta 18-34 for the majority of 2016.
In 2016 J1 became Program Director of Hot 96.3 and Boom 102.9 in Indianapolis. He helped lead Hot 96.3 back to the top 3 signals in the market 18-34. In the summer of 2017 he was transferred to Radio One DC to be the program director of the historic 93.9 WKYS. He helped the station become #1 18-34 and #1 18-49.
In the beginning of 2019 J1 left radio to become the Head of Hip Hop Pandora where his responsibilities include overseeing all of the Hip Hop stations and playlist.
